You’d be forgiven for thinking that Daniel Day-Lewis has been making regular trips to East London’s Hipster coffee mecca Shoreditch Grind in his retirement. Stepping out in New York yesterday he wore what could only be described as something you’d find pinned up in hipster haunt The Goodhood Store.
And what was so great about it? Day-Lewis, who we’re more used to seeing on the red carpet in a perfectly tailored Domenico Vacca suit, just proved that even in your sixties you can dress like a hipster and get away with it. The tonal look encapsulated one of menswear’s biggest trends, workwear, which is favoured by the likes of Oliver Spencer and Liam Hodges, with panache.
The simple thing that DDL did so well is that he committed himself to the cause. Every aspect of the outfit screamed ‘I’m popping to Truman Brewery for a craft beer after work’, from the Carhartt jacket and the baggy cargos to the thick-rolled beanie, flannel shirt and workman boots. And it didn’t stop there, his accessories, by way of an old-school flip phone and hoop earring which is reminiscent of the ultimate Nineties hipster Johnny Depp, simply said – ‘go big or go home’.
If you’re planning to follow suit below are three essential items you need to do so. Oh, and make like Day Lewis and always avoid a beard…
