Wondering how to stand out this winter? We have two words for you: statement outerwear. There’s a reason the trend has persisted for so long; not only does a notice-me coat tie your outfit together in a snap, but it looks pretty great in photos, too. And who says you need to pick just one? When we asked our Instagram followers to vote on their favorite street style coat of 2017—a puffer versus a fluffy faux fur—the results were an even 50-50 split. Maybe you couldn’t decide on a favorite, but here’s our advice: Invest in both, because they’re guaranteed to be trending this time next year, too. Below, see the results from our other street style matchups, from the color the year to the best hats.

The Coat of the Year: Puff vs. Fluff

Your half-and-half results indicate that two coats might just be better than one. A girl needs options, right? Wear your marshmallow puffer during the harshest blizzard—likely to occur during New York Fashion Week—and reserve your fluffy coat for less inclement (read: less soggy) weather.

Hat Trick: Newsboy Caps vs. Berets

Flipping through our street style slideshows, it might feel like every woman is wearing a newsboy cap—and if you live in New York, the trend has already caught on with the downtown crowd. But a classic, invariably chic French beret won out in the end—just barely!—with 53 percent of the vote. Prepare to see a lot more of both toppers on the streets of 2018.

Is Orange the New Pink?

Orange was the standout color on the streets of 2017, but does it have the power to stand up to millennial pink? Apparently not. Despite the fashion set’s swift embrace of the strange color, it turns out you have an allegiance to the pastel; it got 60 percent of your vote.

Monochrome Dressing: Crayola Brights vs. Neutrals

Along with orange, bright colors in general enjoyed a lot of attention on the streets this season. We saw tons of primary colors, like the expertly coordinated coats above. Crayola brights are certainly photogenic, but 55 percent of you voted against them, in favor of head-to-toe neutrals. Who can argue with the timeless appeal of an all-black (or all-camel, or all-white) outfit?

The Great Pant Debate: Party Pants vs. No Pants

This season, if you weren’t wearing jeans, which remain the go-to pant for most of us, you were likely wearing bold, party-ready trousers . . . Or no pants at all. We can’t quite explain the “pants-less” trend, except that Rihanna is really into it. Still, you favored the more realistic choice in the end: Party pants earned 58 percent of the vote, with 42 percent of our followers voting for the risqué option.

Teddy Quinlivan’s Best Street Style Pose of 2017: By a Statue vs. On the Steps

This was Teddy Quinlivan’s year. The striking beauty is a favorite of Vogue photographer Phil Oh, but she also made headlines with her trans rights advocacy in September. Choosing a favorite Teddy pic is nearly impossible, but you voted for the one where she’s in emerald green Louis Vuitton and working the camera. That photo got 56 percent of your votes, and we 100 percent love her.
